Memphis, TN – It was announced in early February that the historic, grand, “Golden Age” Dentzel carousel from Libertyland Amusement Park will be rescued from its storage boxed and will soon spin again.
“Memphis Mayor A C Wharton Jr. signed an agreement with the Children’s Museum of Memphis for the use and care of the Grand Carousel formerly located at the now closed Libertyland amusement park.” it was reported by Fox 13 News.
It was reported that, “The Children’s Museum has raised the money needed to restore the Circa 1909, 100+ year-old Dentzel carousel…” and that the museum has already started the process to raise the funds for a new glass building on the museum’s front lawn to house the restored historic carousel. Right out front to greet all, as the historic carousel was designed to.
The Libertyland is one of the few “all horse” Dentzel carousels. (Of course, Texas has two). The Libertyland carousel has been in storage since the park closed in 2005 – its future uncertain, although the city held on to it and promised to bring it back. And Memphis has stayed true to its promise.
Positioned at the entrance to the Children’s Museum, the 48-horse antique carousel will be a popular moving Folk Art museum unto itself.
