Early archive photos from the Gustav and William Dentzel Companies. Philadelphia “Golden Age” carousel carvers and builders, 1870s-1920s.
Gustav Dentzel immigrated to the US from Germany as a teenager in 1860 and along with Looff, was one of the earliest major carousel builders. The Dentzel Carousel Company, (first Gustav, and then his son, William after Gustav’s death in 1909), was carving and creating carousels from 1867 until 1928, creating some of the most beautiful carousels and figures ever made. Largely responsible for many of the fine Dentzel carousel horses and menagerie figures were long-standing master-carver Salvatore “Cherni” Cernigliaro, and twice employed master-carver Daniel Muller.
