The Carousel At Pottstown Awarded $250,000 Grant, Looks to Spring 2016 Opening
Historic 1906 PTCA #9 Mechanism Repopulated with New Hand-Carved Figures
POTTSTOWN, PA – The spring of 2016 could finally be the opening year for The Carousel at Pottstown. It has been 15 years from inception to here.
The project has repopulated the historic 1906 PTC #9 Carousel frame. The machine last operated intact in 1964 at Twin Grove Park in Pine Grove, Schuylkill County, PA. The beautiful horses and menagerie animals from this very early PTC machine included some beautiful early PTC horses and menagerie from E. Joy Morris Co., as well as Dentzel figures, and many which certainly appeared to be carved by Muller.
“The carousel, housed in a building at 30 W. King St., still needs some work, including applying varnish to four to five animals, reworking some poles and receiving certification from the state,” according to project Vice President Jim Arms. “The project has raised $1.4 million so far and likely will spend $2 million total, Arms said.
Most recently, to help put the project over the top, a $250,000 grant was awarded by the Montgomery County Redevelopment Authority. The money will be used to finish any painting, build a gift shop in the lobby, and construct restrooms and community rooms for small parties. Water service and other utilities will be installed.
Finally, the Pottstown carousel ready by spring, organizers say. To sponsor an animal, volunteer or find more information, visit the Pottstown Carousel Online at www.pottstowncarousel.org.
