Olcott Beach Carousel Park to Celebrate 13th Season
Sunday will include free carousel rides and some classic cars
OLCOTT, NY — It might not be the biggest or the grandest carousel in New York, but it is just as historic. The 1928 Allan Herschell carousel has just two rows of horses, but they love it like a Dentzel in Olcott Beach since it arrived to fill the empty space in the restored historic roundhouse building in 2003.
To celebrate Olcott Beach Carousel Park’s 13th season, the park will host a community appreciation day on Sunday to thank park patrons and donors. The event will have a ‘Roaring Twenties’ feel. “We kind of tailor this celebration around the era that the carousel was built, in the late 1920s,” park treasurer Gary Cammarata said.
The annual event also commemorates the birthday of the Olcott Carousel Park’s 87-year-old Allan Herschell carousel. The carousel came to the park in 2003 to occupy the original Olcott Amusement Park carousel roundhouse. The historic roundhouse building had been restored just the year before. With the help of community horse adoptions and other fundraising, the historic carousel and restored roundhouse had their grand opening on May 17, 2003. READ ALL THE OLCOTT CAROUSEL HISTORY>>>
“Carousel Community Appreciation Day” will run from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday [Aug. 23] with free activities for kids, including free carousel rides. All others are still a quarter.
In addition to free rides, the event will feature antique cars from the 1920s, appearances from Popeye and Olive Oyl, and a puppet performance of “Puss ‘N Boots” by California’s Omnipresent Puppet Theater from 12:15 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. Free washable tattoos and face paint and balloon animals for kids and rides on the Olcott fire truck from 1 to 3 p.m.
Skee ball enthusiasts can compete in a challenge, with prizes in three divisions, including movie tickets up for grabs. “We put this event on to say thank you to the people who have donated to our park,” Cammarata said. The event is free.
The Olcott Beach Carousel Park is open from noon to 6 p.m. daily Wednesday through Sunday, and until 8 p.m. on Saturday.
